Dear David S. Goyer, John August, and Craig Mazin,
I’m writing you today while listening to Murder By Death. This is not a threat of any sort. They’re a damn good band and I was inspired to do so by a playlist released by artist Emma Rios about what she listened to while doing the art for Pretty Deadly, a great female lead and created comic that I’m just going to assume you’ll never read.
The reason I bring up what I’m listening to is because it is pretty much the only thing keeping me from punching my very expensive computer at the comments you three made about She-Hulk. Specifically the ones David Goyer made, but Mazin’s definitely on notice for calling Jennifer Walters, Esq. “Slut-Hulk.” If you don’t remember what you said, here’s the very comprehensive article from The Mary Sue.First of all, have you guys actually read anything that featured She-Hulk past the age of 13 or have you only seen cheesecake and pornographic fanart with her since then? Because I feel like if you have, you would have known that:
1.) Bruce Banner would not actually have sex with her because they’re COUSINS. This isn’t some Game of Thrones bullshit. This character was introduced as a relative and not as a love interest. Also, Bruce has gotten with women who weren’t irradiated.
2.) That Jennifer Walters has been a character with her own agency since her creation and introduction. She learned to control her powers in a way that Bruce never really has. When she can change back and forth between being green and being human looking, she often stays green because she LIKES it. Being She-Hulk gave her confidence she never had before. When she found out she couldn’t change back into being human when she was with the Fantastic Four, she just asked, “So what’s the bad news?”This character aspect has allowed artists to get a bit cheesecake-y with her, but it’s always been a central tenet of her character that she grew stronger from being She-Hulk. Not just physically, but mentally as well. That’s why she quickly became one of my favorite characters in the Marvel Universe and I support her amazing solo series that’s currently being written by Charles Soule. Jennifer Walters is a prime example of owning who you are and not giving a damn about how anyone else will view you.
If being confident, assertive, and being able to make her own choices as a character makes her “a giant green porn star,” then I’d REALLY hate to see what you think of the literal Amazonian goddess that’s being written into… *sigh*… Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.
I’m going to continue listening to Murder By Death and go re-read the first four issues of the new She-Hulk comic. I hope you guys will feel motivated to do so after The Mary Sue called you out, but I doubt it.
Staff Writer at NerdophilesPS: Oh, and Goyer, to your “How many people that raised their hands have ever been laid?” comment about people who have heard of the Martian Manhunter: YES I HAVE. BEING A NERD AND BEING SEXUALLY ACTIVE ARE NOT MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE.
PPS: I’m sorry you had to read that last comment, Dad.
