400 Minutes And Counting Down the Drain…

Do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do, doooo do do doooo doo doo, do doo do do doo, do do do.

So does that that theme sound familiar at all? Go ahead, keep on humming it, I’ll wait. I hope you get whacked in the face with nostalgia. It’s the Tetris theme. Those blocks that fall and you make lines and stuff explodes (not really, but the lines go away with a bang). The infuriating ‘z’ piece and the continually speeding up of the dropping pieces. Oh yes, Tetris…

Sadly I lost because I messed up and I was trying to take a screenshot, which is really hard when playing such a fast-paced game.

I remember I used to play it on a gameboy like handheld, it was the retro black and white blocks. It was really fun. And I admit, I didn’t know the rules. I didn’t know you had to make lines, I always thought it was make big blocks and a space for the ‘long skinny piece’ that slams down into the hole (get your mind out of the gutter). And then boom, all the blocks go away. I admit it wasn’t until two days ago that I had the epiphany on how Tetris really was supposed to be played. I know, a bit pathetic. I’m a grown young adult who’s played Tetris for years and years and I never thought to look up the rules on how to actually play it. Oh well.

Anyway, Tetris fever came back and it hit me with a vengeance. Therese has been playing Tetris Battle on Facebook for a year now. I finally clicked the app link and played a few games. That’s all it took and I was hooked.

In the past two days I’ve literally spent 8 hours just playing Tetris Battle. It’s addicting; I haven’t even been on Reddit as much (which definitely says something). The more you play the more XP you get. You get a certain amount of “energy” a day, and it refills every few minutes (like 1 energy every 4 minutes). You can buy an energy pass to play all day if you want. You also get coins for every game you play. These coins can be used to increase Left/Right Speed, Line Clear Speed, Soft Drop Speed, and Next Piece Queue. Each increase costs 2,000 coins or cash (which you buy with real monies). You can change the look of the pieces with money as well.

Once you begin a battle, this is the page you see. The double bomb feature is the best one to use and it's really the only one you need. Let's beat this person in Tetris Battle now.

Okay enough about that, what about game play? You have different game types: Battle 2P, Battle 6P, Sprint 4P, Marathon, Sprint, and Arena. I have been playing Battle 2P because it’s the funnest. I’m a pretty competitive person so when I lose, I get angry. Every game you win, you get stars and rank up. If you lose the game, you lose stars and can lose rank. I hate losing stars.

You get better and better every time you play, you learn to see the combos and start placing pieces ahead.

The fun thing about Tetris Battle is you have to delete 2 lines in order to send 1 line to your opponent. Or if you get consecutive lines 1 after the next. You can also send a Tetris (4 deleted lines) to your opponent if you get a Tetris. Any lines that opponents send you turn into grayed out blocks with bombs scattered throughout, so if you land a piece on the bomb, it gets rid of that entire line.

So I can't really pause the game, so I took this screenshot while playing, so be happy. :) Just kidding. I KO'ed the person once (that's when they're pieces reach the top) and got 22 lines. I'm pretty proud of this game.

If you want to procrastinate, or just miss Tetris, then play Tetris Battle on Facebook; it is so damned fun and entertaining. Plus, you can increase your finger twitch muscles for better video game play. It’s a win-win.
